Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle was initially built over 800 years ago, with additions and alterations performed since then. It is strategically located at a crossing point on the river Nore. Much restoration work has taken place over the last 100 years, and it is the major tourist attraction in the region. Its grounds and gardens are great for walking or just taking pictures, plus there is a children's playground.

The first castle construction was built from timber in a motte-and-bailey style by Richard de Clare (a.k.a. Strongbow) in 1172 to control the crossing point on the river Nore. It was an important part of the town's defenses and a symbol of Norman occupation. In 1192 the first stone castle was built by William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke. Three towers from that period still remain today.

In 1391, ownership of the castle was transferred to James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormonde. During the early 20th century, the castle fell into a state of neglect. It was also the location of some military action during the Irish Civil War in 1922. The castle was sold in 1967 for the token amount of £50 to the people of Kilkenny by Arthur Butler, 6th Marquess and 24th Earl of Ormonde.

Kilkenny Castle is located in the centre of Kilkenny city. Click the map pin icon to view the location on a map.
