Rory Gallaghar was born in Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, and grew up in Cork. At age nine, he got his first guitar. It was several years later, in 1963, that he purchased his famous Fender Sunburst Stratocaster for £100 at Crowley's Music Store on McCurtain Street in Cork.

Many modern day musicians cite Rory Gallagher as a musical influence and inspiration. These include: The Edge from U2, Slash of Guns N'Roses, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Davy Knowles, Janick Gers of Iron Maiden, James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers, Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest, Vivian Campbell of Def Leppard, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa and Rosendo Mercado.
